Angels and Shepherds

Luke 2:8

It is one of the most magical moments in the Christmas story - angels appear to shepherds in the middle of the night, announcing that a saviour has been born in Bethlehem. Shepherds were on the lowest rung of society, considered dirty outcasts, always at the edge of town, so this announcement was both unexpected and wonderful.

All paintings of the Annunciation to the shepherds are based on the Gospel of Luke, 2:8, the only place where this story appears.

"And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.

But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

" Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” The angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.” Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.”
