Massacre of the Innocents

Matthew 2:16

This part of Matthew's story doesn't seem very Christmas-like, but to the first Christians, this was a crucial part of the story. Jesus was born in danger. Herod wanted the Magi to tell him where the baby was, so he could be killed, lest he threaten Herod's reign as king. But an angel has told the Magi to leave town without talking to Herod. This enrages Herod, who takes no chances -- he orders all male children under the age of two to be killed. Jesus escapes because an angel tells Joseph to flee to Egypt ( known as the flight to Egypt).

For readers familiar with the story of Moses, this massacre would recall how Moses, too, escaped the Pharoah's order to kill all young Jewish infant boys. Matthew is suggesting that Jesus is the new Moses.

"And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.

But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

" Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” The angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.” Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.”
