The Baptism of Christ

Matthew 3:16, Mark 1:9, John 1:32

Christ's ministry begins with his baptism by John the Baptist, in the Jordan river. For painters, this scene was a challenge. Not only did they have to get the scene right in the river, but they also had to find a way to represent God above, and the holy spirit descending like a dove.

" 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan River to be baptized by John 14 But John tried to change his mind. He told Jesus, “I need to be baptized by you, and you come to me to baptize you?” 15 “Please do so, because it’s good for us to do what God says is right,” Jesus told him. So John agreed to do it.

16 Right after he was baptized, Jesus came out of the water. The heavens were opened, and he saw God’s spirit like a dove descending, landing on him. 17 A voice from heaven said, “This is my son whom I love, who pleases me.”"

Gospel of Matthew 3:13-17
