The Annunciation

Luke 1:26

Painters couldn't resist this event in the bible. The angel Gabriel arrives to tell the Virgin Mary that she has been chosen to be the mother of the Saviour. There are many versions of this painting, most of which find Mary reading a book, even though books had not been invented yet ( a scroll would have been more accurate). Mary looks serene, while the angel appears as a servant in some paintings, and a force to be reckoned with in others.

All paintings of the Annunciation are based on the Gospel of Luke, 1:26, the only place where this story appears.

"And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.

But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Gospel of Luke 2:8-12

" Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” The angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.” Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.”

Gospel of Luke 1:34-37
